PlanteSaga – An Edible School Garden

Hands-on learning, sustainability and community – from seed to finished meal

About the Project

PlanteSaga is a project in development where children and young people learn about growing food, nature and sustainability through practical work in an edible school garden. The project is being developed in collaboration with Hanøy Primary School and Kindergarten on Askøy.

Participants will be involved throughout the entire process – from planning, sowing and planting to care, harvesting and using the produce. The activities provide practical knowledge while strengthening collaboration, responsibility, curiosity and achievement.

The project will be adapted to different needs and abilities, with room for both small and larger tasks. Our goal is to create an inclusive learning environment where more people can contribute, experience belonging and see tangible results from their own efforts.

What We Have Done So Far

The project is being developed in collaboration with Hanøy Primary School and Kindergarten on Askøy. The school and kindergarten now share the same outdoor area, and Saganettverk and its volunteers have begun the practical preparation work.

Volunteers have spent many hours clearing the area, removing unwanted vegetation and opening up spaces that can later be used for growing food and other activities. Work on the area is still in progress.

The pupils have not yet taken part in the activities. Before this phase can begin, we need funding for the necessary equipment, materials and further preparation. The project currently depends entirely on volunteers who contribute their time, practical work, equipment or financial support.

Project Goals

• establish an edible garden that can be used by both the school and kindergarten
• give children practical knowledge about growing food, nature and sustainability
• allow children to follow the process from seed and plant to harvesting and use
• create an inclusive activity with tasks adapted to different needs and abilities
• strengthen collaboration, responsibility, curiosity and achievement
• develop the outdoor area into a learning environment that can be used over time

What the Project Needs

To complete the preparation of the area and begin the activities, the project needs support for gardening tools, soil, seeds, plants, raised growing beds, watering solutions, storage and further preparation of the site.

We also need volunteers who can contribute practical work, specialist knowledge and help with implementation. Financial support will enable us to purchase the necessary equipment and create a safe, accessible and lasting programme for the children at Hanøy Primary School and Kindergarten.

Next Steps

• continue clearing and preparing the area
• develop a detailed plan together with the school and kindergarten
• apply for funding and seek new partners
• acquire the necessary equipment, materials and plants
• establish the first growing areas
• involve the children when the area is safe and ready for activities
